Clown Loaches are best kept with peaceful to moderately active fish. They do well with large tetras, barbs, and peaceful gouramis. Tank mates must tolerate warm water conditions.
They are social and should be kept in groups of five or more. This reduces stress and prevents shy behavior. Groups display more natural interactions.
Avoid aggressive or territorial species. Fin nippers and very small fish are not ideal companions. Slow fish may be stressed by their activity.
Bottom dwelling tank mates should be chosen carefully. Other loaches or larger catfish can work in big tanks. Adequate space prevents competition for shelters.
Clown Loaches require large aquariums with stable water parameters and strong filtration. They appreciate soft substrates that protect their sensitive barbels. Plenty of hiding spots using wood, rocks, and caves is essential.
Water quality must be maintained with frequent partial water changes. They thrive in warm, well oxygenated water with moderate current. Consistent parameters help reduce stress and disease.
Lighting should be moderate to subdued to match their natural habitat. They enjoy planted tanks but also need open areas to swim. A long tank footprint is more important than height.
Because of their size and activity, tank planning must consider adult growth. Crowded or undersized tanks lead to stress and health problems. A stable, mature aquarium is strongly recommended.
Clown Loaches are omnivorous and accept a wide variety of foods. They readily eat sinking pellets, wafers, and quality prepared diets. A varied diet supports long term health and coloration.
Live and frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp are beneficial. These foods encourage natural foraging behavior and activity. They should be offered several times per week.
Vegetable matter such as blanched zucchini is also important. Plant based foods help balance digestion and nutrition. Algae wafers can be used as supplemental feeding.
Feeding should be done in the evening when they are most active. Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality. Multiple small feedings are better than one large meal.
Breeding Clown Loaches in home aquariums is extremely rare. They require specific environmental cues not easily replicated. Most specimens in the trade are commercially bred.
In nature, spawning is linked to seasonal flooding. Changes in water chemistry and flow trigger reproduction. These conditions are difficult to simulate at home.
Eggs are scattered and receive no parental care. Fry development occurs in large river systems. Survival depends on vast space and food availability.
Because of these challenges, breeding attempts are uncommon. Hobbyists should not expect natural spawning. Focus is usually placed on long term care instead.
